Was the weigh in before or after the grinding?

    • While changing over to the street tires the other day, I noticed the passenger side hub had some internal damage that was poking through to the outside... :-k

In the space between the retaining bolts and the hub body, exterior was pushed out, effectively preventing me from getting a socket on the 9/16" nut.

Upon disassembly, I found that the engaging ring was still perfect, but it had grooved out the 5 large internal 'splines' in the hub.

I knew I had heard a bad noise! Fortunately this failure did not prevent me from enjoying the rest of the day at Rausch. The hubs did what they are designed to do-- be the 'fuse' in the front drivetrain. [-o< A new set of spare hubs is on it's way.

      • Also in the works is a power steering pump upgrade.

In a busy day of work, I frantically grabbed the 4WD Hardware catalog, with the intention of getting a HD power steering pump on it's way to me. The OEM pump was squealing, giving sporadic power, and leaking like a siv.

Unfortunately 4WD Hardware only sells AGR pumps...

Upon reassembly (the one I ordered required swapping the reservoir (sp?) ) I found excessive play in the pump shaft. I though to myself "this ain't right!".

This AM, for my own curiosity, I measured the play. The old & beat pump had 0.004" play in the shaft. The new/rebuit/HD pump had 0.009" of play. This thing is going back!

The knocking noise is actually from the shaft rocking around in its bore!

        In my book, AGR = bull****! =;
        $180 worth of (s)crap!
NAPA has their rebuilt for $50... NAPA here I come!

              I can't agree more Dan...

I'm just unwilling to spend the time ans $$ on the build right now. It is far less time and $$ consuming to keep fixing the marginal parts. I have a Willys that needs resto and a back yard that is going to get landscaped this summer. The Barnacle Build is low priority right now.

Sooo... in the meantime, and for your forum viewing pleasure, look forward to more 'look what I broke' posts. 8-[

Unfortunately, it seems it is a $50 rebuit or a $160 PSC. Any other options??

                • Pete...why not just go with a stock "new" pump. I imagine it can't be much more than the rebuilt.

                  • Kev, 4WD Hardware has them for $170...

I'll have to call around. There are a TON of other autoparts stores in the area...

                    • Allocate the axles into the landscape project funds...

Time management, scheduling 30min on the axles, 30min on the Willy, the remaining time on the yard each day. The yard will be back breaking time, the axles, and Willy will be the enjoyment time. Keeping you sane for the yard and happy you are still making progress on Willy & Barnicle. Sounds like a win win to me. She's happy, your happy, the heeps will be happy. Heck we'll all be happy!

Do you really want to be outside working in the hot sun at 2pm? or inside working on heep in the shade?

                      hehe

                      • you know jeep help and even yard help is only a call away...or maybe a few calls and the yard will be done in less than a weekend. Anything to not have to watch another CJ replace their hubs on the trail.
